There has been a rise in emails being received by our customers concerning a bogus request to offer to register the .com version of a .ie domain that the customer currently owns. The email claims to offer the recipient the first option to get ownership of the .com domain that a “third party” wants to buy for the bargain price is €199 for 10 years.

We consider this to be along the lines of a scam for the following reasons :-

  1. They claim they are “under obligation” to contact you – they arent.
  2. They claim they are offering you a great price of €199 per year – they arent.
  3. They claim the third party will no longer be able to use the .com – there probably was never a third party to begin with.

Our advice is always renew the domain with a trust partner – like Jascom Ltd or an ICANN-accredited domain name registrar. As always if you receive an suspicious unsolicted email just delete it.
